If you put any able-bodied man, no matter how peaceful, into a room with a sword and a practice dummy and leave him alone, eventually the man would pick up the sword and try to stab the dummy. It is human nature.

You can't always get what you want. But don't be afraid to ask.

This was actually a solid 4 stars for me for the first half.. But then, of course, it went downhill. I don't know maybe it's me but I just enjoyed it less and less the longer i read. By the time I finished, I forgot all about the first half that I actually liked.

I'm starting to think this author just isn't for me. Although knowing me, I'll probably read more eventually.

These masks we wear betray us. They reveal us.
We are never more ourselves than when we think people aren't watching.

Ok, that was awesome! I wasn't a big fan of the ending but I couldn't put the book down and that's actually all I wanted so there you go.
Loved it.

Thank you to Netgalley for an ARC of this book

A crushed spark never ignites. That's not how you fan the flame.

That was disappointing. The ending was a big fat "meh" (and I'm being nice here) and if there is ever another book or a novella after this to tie up the huge amount of lose ends, I might come back and fix my rating. But right now I'm angry. I honestly kept reading this for the Beta Team and none of them got any closure. Not cool.

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

There's magic in spoken language. It's binding. There's a reason people ask for someone else's word.
Every sentence a person utters can be a promise—or a betrayal.

So.. Griffin and Cat are stupid. I sound like a 5 year old but I can't like them and that's a problem when it's the main characters. I'm taking one star out for each of them and giving it three for the rest of the Beta Team because they are now my babies and I think I love them.

Cat. Griffin. Please be less stupid in the next books because I love Greek Mythology and you're kinda ruining it for me.

Gah! I love this woman and I will read anything she writes.

My only issue with this one was Pike. The hot piece of ass let me down and made me want to smack him on his stupid head. If there was an option to do that and get it out of my system it would be a 5 star read.
Loved it.

You're going to need to remember that we're not only women, we're pirates.

You wouldn't give a second thought to a couple of men aboard your ship behaving in such a way or talking such talk. You do not get to judge us more harshly for being women.

I have twenty-eight excellent girls aboard this ship, and their pasts have shaped them. Just as yours has shaped you. And every single one of them, down to little Roslyn, deserves your respect.

"I would be if you weren't wearing your hair in a girly little ponytail," I say, reaching for the ends of his white hair.

"It's not good manners to taunt a fairy. We have notoriously thin skin." Despite the threat, his eyes spark with excitement.

"I'm sorry," I say, "your ponytail is very masculine. I feel like I'm going to grow a beard just looking at it"

"Mouthy thing."

To Kill a Kingdom

To Kill a Kingdom To Kill a Kingdom by Alexandra Christo
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

⭐️3.5 stars⭐️

I've made a mistake. It started with a prince, as most stories do.

I think not going into this with super duper expectations was really smart.

I enjoyed the book but what I really didn't like was the ending.. That final battle? I needed more from that. I mean, it's the final battle. I wanna be at the edge of my seat, you know? And then how we get everything wrapped up in a couple pages in the end. Yeah, I wasn't happy about that part either.

But whatever, the story was fun, there was a pirate/prince and sirens and a cool ship and honestly? I had fun reading it. So there you go.

The kitchen door opened once more and Deacon drew up short. His gray eyes widened as he spotted Apollo.
Gable bumped into him from behind. "Who's that?"

"Nope," Deacon said, turning right back around. "That is all kinds of nope right there."

Main reason I keep reading these books is because I love these people and I get the Covenant series nostalgia feels. And of course because JLA. Seth and Josie are cool and all but they're not Alex and Aiden.
And I NEED more Deacon and more Apollo!
(JLA if you hurt my babies I will be very very angry)

Also, in case I haven't mentioned it before... I want to BURN that cover.

Ruin Ruin by Samantha Towle
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I was born to do this.
And every fucking thing I've lost and had to sacrifice to get here will be worth it.
The hush comes. My heart pounds harder and faster.
I get to my feet.
The cameras move in front of me. I don't focus on them. I can't. I'm already in my head.

Walk to the ring. Fight. Win.
That's all I can think about.
And it's time.
My eyes meet Scott's across the ring.
He looks hard. Empty.
But I'm harder. Emptier.
The bell rings, and I go in, fists up.

Gods, that was a sweet book!

"This is unwanted sexual advance." I sound like a bored HR manager giving a presentation.

"So report me."

"Did you two look at the slide yet?" Dr McCormick's jolly voice ricochets through the halls and Lucas steps back, finally.

"Yes sir. Her white cell count is high and Lucas just propositioned me for sex." That second half is retained in my head.

"All right then. Let's get her on some antibiotics."

He walks off and I turn back to Lucas. "I reported you in my head," I tell him.

"I did something in my head too."

More Than We Can Tell

More Than We Can Tell More Than We Can Tell by Brigid Kemmerer
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

We all have free will, Rev. If it's a test for you, it's a test for me, for Mom, and even a test for your father. You could look at all of life as a test. No one lives in a vacuum. Our actions have an impact on everyone around us. Sometimes without us even realizing it.

A test implies that you alone are being challenged. But that's impossible when you're surrounded by others whose actions affect your decisions.

If there's any test here, it's one you've created for yourself.

Apart from the issues I had with the heroine, this was beautiful and Rev was a sweetheart
BUT
Letters to the Lost will always be my favorite.

Now I kinda want Matt's story :3

A photo is just that: a moment in time.
We don't know what's really going on with the people in the picture. And we don't know what's going on with the photographer.
What makes it important is what we bring to the photo.
What makes it important is how we feel when we look at it.
And a photograph doesn't have to be about riots or death or famine or children at play in war zone to make an impact.

Caught him in a good mood, I did.
Not.
"So... I haven't gotten sick."

"Astute observation, mortal."

"Is that just luck, or do you control who gets the plague?" I ask.

"Were you born with all your organs intact?" he responds.

"Yes..." I say cautiously.

"Good," he responds, "then I expect you to use the one beneath your skull."

Pestilence is such a sweetheart I swear! A mass murdering sweetheart but sweetheart anyway.
Whoever disagrees can come fight me.

I had some issues with our heroine at times and I think I wanted something different when it came to the ending (view spoiler) but I really enjoyed it and now I want War!
