Of Silk and Steam

Of Silk and Steam Of Silk and Steam by Bec McMaster
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

She might have damned well been invisible, but she had learned.
Beauty could be a curse or it could be used, and she had learned to use it well over the years.

I loved this series and I loved Bec McMaster's writing! And the characters! Even when I had issues with them I never got to actually dislike them. That makes me happy. Feeling close to the characters is important to me folks.
I will definitely be reading more of her books.

The man with the biggest fists or the best skills in a knife fight isn't always the strongest or the bravest.

It's those who survive the worst life can throw at them and keep on fighting.

Garrett is a gosh darn dreamboat.

I've seen revenge. So many times and in so many different ways. I've pulled the bodies out of the Thames and arrested hysterical wives or husbands.

Revenge is a cold, lonely place, and it consumes a person until there is nothing else left but bitterness and ashes.
And it always affects so many more than the people involved.

I knew I'd love Rosalind and Lynch! My favorite so far.

Wildcard

Wildcard Wildcard by Marie Lu
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

We fight for survival with everything we've got, as if the oxygen mask and the seat belt and avoidance of a square of chocolate cake might be the thing that saves us.

That's the difference between the real and the virtual. Reality is where you can lose the ones you love. Reality is the place where you can feel the cracks in your heart.

M: Okay, for my third wish I want you to grant me one thousand wishes.

G: Invalid request.

M: Seriously now?

I really enjoyed this!
A great collection of short stories, with Genie probably being my favorite of the six, and I really liked the interview/dialogue thing going on in most of them. The science parts were kinda tricky to follow at times but it didn't stop me from enjoying the book.

Big thanks to Varun Sayal for a copy of his book.

"I am tempted to incapacitate him with the hemlock and then castrate him."

Lena paled. "I don't think that would be very wise," she said. "And the only knife we own is what I use for the cooking. You're not using that."

"I was planning on using a spoon," Honoria replied.

So I finished the book and realized "Wait, what? I didn't highlight a single quote?"
Madness! I think it's getting a bit boring.. Or maybe it's me I don't know.

I am incapable too, of bearing to lose what I wholeheartedly love. What did I use to tell you?
"That's how it is with what you love. You must be prepared to endure the pain when you lose it.
Because, you always lose it."

A great debut novel by a very promising new author.
The world she created is amazing and I loved reading about it and about Drynoe and her friends' quest. Not gonna lie, I used the glossary a couple times and to be honest I liked that it was there and I wasn't left wondering what certain things meant.

I will definitely be looking out for the next book.

A big thanks to Constantina Maud for giving me a chance to read this.

Legacy

Legacy Legacy by C.J. Daugherty
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

Life is full of pain, and you might as well get used to that right now.
It doesn't go away. It accumulates.
Like snow.
You just get better at dealing with it.

So nothing really happened in this book and the love triangle made it so much worse. I will never understand the need to destroy a character just so we can have an excuse for it to happen. (view spoiler) But oh well, what do I know.

I'll keep reading because I want some answers and hopefully I'll be less annoyed by the end of the next book.

The voice in her head told her not to trust him. But then, the voice in her head didn't trust anyone.

Well, damn! I didn't expect to like this so much, probably why it took me so long to start it, but I'm glad I did. Although I'm sensing a lot of frustration in the future. (view spoiler)

But oh well... Off to the next one.

"The city of Sin is painted white so that the filth can stain."
I actually had fun reading this book. And going into this with no expectations, and no intention to compare it to SoC, was a great idea. I just wanted to love the main characters more and I would be even happier.

Sometimes we're not who we want to be because we're supposed to be something else.

Honour above life.

I actually loved this! I'm so happy!

I could still see a young Eelyn standing on the beach turned into the wind, a
sword in one hand an axe in the other. I hadn't lost her. I hadn't buried her. I'd only let her change into something new.

This Savage Song

Violence breeds.
Someone pulls a trigger, sets off a bomb, drives a bus full of tourists off a bridge, and what's left in the wake isn't just shell casings, wreckage, bodies. There's something else. Something bad.
An aftermath.
A recoil.
A reaction to all that anger and pain and death.
